On Sat. 12/12/09 at 2:43pm, Mohegan was alerted to a working structure fire on Beaver Dr in Yorktown during extreme cold weather. Car 2268 who lives across the street, reported the fire. Upon arrival, a first alarm assignmant was transmitted for heavy smoke and fire visible from the attached garage area and quickly advancing into the residence. Mohegan EMS, Mahopac Falls FD Rescue 19-6-1, Yorktown FD Engine 270/FAS-Team, Battalion 17 and County Car 2 were now added to the assignment. Members stretched two 1 3/4" hose lines and one 2 1/2" hoseline from Ladder 10 and also began to ventilate by cutting open the the roof. Engine 258 grabbed a hydrant and laid 5" supply hose from a hydrant up the street. Engine 255 and Engine 257 also assisted on scene. Members attempted an aggressive interior attack but were forced to go to exterior operations as the fire conditions quickly deteriorated when the fire was pushing across the attic. Ladder 10's 75' aerial was put into operation and the aerial's master stream was used to knocked down the heavy fire. Members then re-entered after the fire was knocked down to further extinguish the fire. Once the fire was extinguished, members began to overhaul and salvage the resident's belongings. The Westchester County DES Cause and Origin Team investigated. Members began to pack up all the hose and place equipment back in service. All units went back into service at approximately 6pm. This fire occurred during our annual Candy Cane Run and we apologize to all the residents for the delay/partial cancellation of the runs. Also assisting on scene was Con Edison Electric, Yorktown Highway Dept who sanded the road, and Santa Claus who graciously assisted us by opening up the fire hydrant, which supplied us the necessary water to fight the fire.
