On September 11, 2009 at 7pm, Mohegan firefighters, led by 2nd Assistant Chief Adam Cerrato participated in a moving memorial service at the Hart Library in Shrub Oak. Under the gazebo the American Flag and Mohegan's "President's Bell" presided over a solemn ceremony. About 50 members of the public were in attendance as Yorktown Supervisor Don Peters led the assembled group in the pledge of Allegiance. A bagpiper played and those assembled were treated to a stirring rendition of the "National Anthem" and "America The Beautiful" sung by Yorktown Police Officer Angel Garcia. The September 11th anniversary has particular significance to the members of Mohegan FD and VAC as our firefighters and ambulance corps personnel worked at the World Trade Center site alongside FDNY firefighters during the rescue & recovery in 2001. We also assisted FDNY at fire scenes with Mohegan Engine 258 providing manpower and station coverage at FDNY's Engine 88/Ladder 38 quarters in the Bronx for 9/12 and 9/13. Mohegan Engine 258 and Ambulance 69B3 also responded with manpower to Ground Zero. The ceremony concluded with the ceremonial ringing of the bell in what is known as "STRIKING THE FOUR FIVES". In the fire service this is the rendering of final honors to departed comrades.
