On Thursday afternoon 5/28/09 at approximately 3:10pm, Mohegan Firefighters were dispatched to a possible structure fire on Jefferson Court in Yorktown. Yorktown PD arrived on the scene first and reported smoke from the structure and confirmed the structure fire. First members arrived to find heavy smoke pushing from the windows, eaves, and attic vents. Heavy fire was also showing out the rear of the house from the kitchen window and eaves. Members quickly stretched two 1 3/4" attack lines from Engine 253, which also hooked up to a hydrant located in front of the home. Ladder 35 arrived 2nd due and backed into a neighboring driveway and set up its aerial for roof operations. Initial reports of a person trapped inside went unfounded, after members immediately performed primary and secondary searches of the home. Members found heavy fire in the kitchen area with fire extension in the attic, where 2 box spring mattresses were found to be burning just above the kitchen, creating heavy smoke and high heat in the attic space. Firefighters ventilated the building by opening up the windows and attic vents to release the smoke and heat. Yorktown FD's FAS-Team was standing by at the scene during the fire, as well as Buchanan FD's Cascade to fill air bottles. 69B2 also stoodby for any possible injuries and assisted in rehab. Thankfully, no injuries were reported at the scene. The Westchester County Dept. of Emergency Services Batallion 17 and Cause and Origin Team also helped on scene. All units cleared the scene at approximately 6:00pm. Photos courtesy of FF Calore and FF Lourenco
