On Fri. 8/8/08 at 4:49pm, Mohegan Fire and EMS were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with injuries at Rt. 6 and Hill Blvd in Jefferson Valley. Engine 253 arrived first due followed by Rescue 32, 69B3, and Engine 257. The actual location was on Hill Blvd. at the entrance to the Jefferson Valley Mall, just in from Rt. 6. Members found a 2 car accident with one of the cars head-on into a tree. Mohegan EMS members immediately began treating the patient of the car into the tree, while firefighters secured this vehicle by making sure the vehcile was in park, cutting the battery cables to prevent the airbags from deploying, and placing wood chocks around the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. It was at this time that firefighters smelled gasoline eminating from the bottom of the car. Due to this, members stretched a 100' 1 3/4" hoseline as a precuation to protect the EMS personnel, as well as the patient. Members stoodby until the vehicle was secured by a flatbed tow truck then further checked to make sure that there was no gas leak from the vehicle. The second vehicle suffered minor damage with the occupant not injured. The patient of the first vehicle was transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for treatment. All units cleared at 5:30pm. During the incident and transport, 69B1 was on standby in quarters to cover any further EMS calls.
