On Saturday evening 2/25/23, Mohegan FD was dispatched to Mohegan Ave for a reported structure fire. The caller was a neighbor reporting the fire and that the homeowners were possibly trapped inside. With this information, Mohegan FD units started out the 10-75 (Working Structure Fire) assignment and also added Engine 258 on the assignment. Mohegan FD arrived on scene quickly and confirmed a working structure fire with smoke showing. Firefighters quickly stretched two 1 3/4” hoselines from Engine 256 to make an aggressive interior attack, while other crews began to perform primary searches. Ladder 10 set up its aerial ladder and additional firefighters ventilated the roof. During the primary searches, a dog was located inside and was quickly rescued and removed from the residence. The dog was then turned over to other firefighters outside and EMS personnel. Yorktown Paramedic 34Medic1 quickly assisted by treating the dog with oxygen. A quick decision was made to have the dog transported to the Katonah Bedford Veterinary Center for further treatment. The dog was treated on scene with the assistance of Yorktown Police, Yorktown Paramedics, and AMR EMS. The dog was transported from the scene by Yorktown Police. While this was being performed, heavy fire was found on the first floor, with the fire being quickly knocked down. Both primary and secondary searches were performed with nobody trapped and that the homeowners were not at home. Firefighters then performed extensive overhaul to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. Other units assisting on scene were Yorktown FD (Car 2533 and Rescue 16/FAS-Team), Putnam Valley FD (Car 24-1-3 and Rescue 24-6-1), Mohegan EMS 69B1, Peekksill EMS 7506/Rehab, Westchester County Dept of Emergency Services (Battalion 17 and Cause and Origin Team), Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services Battalion 17, and Town of Yorktown representatives (Code Enforcement, Building Dept, Highway Dept, Water Dept). Standing by at Mohegan FD Headquarters and covering our district were Peekskill FD Engine 130 and Somers FD Tower Ladder 18. All units cleared the scene by 10pm. As of this writing, we have learned that the dog is recovering well and in good condition! All photos are courtesy of FF G. Stretz.
