Tonight Sunday 2/2/20 at approximately 9:48pm, just as the Super Bowl was getting down to the final minutes, Mohegan FD (volunteer and career) was dispatched to Cardinal Rd in Cortlandt for a reported chimney fire. Upon arrival of units, an active chimney fire was found with embers and flames visible from the top of the wood stove pipe. Firefighters accessed the roof via ground ladders from the rear deck, while other firefighters began to clean out the interior fire box of burning wood. Firefighters dropped chains down the wood stove pipe to knock down the burning creosote. Firefighters checked the interior of the residence with a thermal imaging camera, while firefighters had to open up a small section of the melted siding around the wood stove pipe to check for extension. No extension was found and the fire was contained to the wood stove pipe. Firefighters then ensured that the fire was fully extinguished and all the burning logs, embers, creosote, and ashes were extinguished in the driveway using water can extinguishers. All units cleared the scene by 10:45pm. Units operating on scene were Car 2262, 226-40, 2265, 2269, Engine 252, Engine 254, Ladder 35, Rescue 32, and Utility 18.
