On Friday 1/31/20 at approximately 4:30pm, Mohegan FD (volunteer and career) was dispatched to Croton Ave in Cortlandt for multiple calls reporting an active chimney fire. Upon arrival of units, the homeowner was found on the roof with a garden hose attempting to extinguish the chimney fire. Firefighters quickly gained access to the roof using ground ladders and other firefighters entered the inside of the residence to begin to extinguish the fire. Firefighters found that the fire was contained inside the chimney and the roof team had to use chains and a 12 foot pike pole from the roof to clear the built up creosote in the chimney. This blockage was knocked down into the fireplace so that the interior team could remove it. Firefighters worked on scene for just over an hour and units cleared the scene by 6pm. Units on scene were Car 2261, 2264, 2266, 2267, 2269, Engine 252, Engine 254, Ladder 35, Rescue 32, Utility 18, and Utility 80. Photos are courtesy of Kempter’s Fire Wire.
