Tonight Sunday 9/8/19 at approximately 7pm, Mohegan FD (volunteer and career) responded to a reported lithium battery on fire in trunk of a vehicle on Lafayette Ave in Cortlandt. Upon arrival, a confirmed vehicle fire was found with fire visible inside the trunk and smoke throughout the passenger compartment of the car. Firefighters first placed wheel chocks to prevent the vehicle from moving and then utilized our battery E-draulic hurst tool to open the trunk, due to the keyless/electric vehicle locking system not functioning properly. The fire was then knocked down quickly using a dry chemical extinguisher. Once the trunk was fully opened, the fire was fully extinguished using a 1 3/4” hoseline stretched from Engine 254. It was determined that a portable battery jump starter pack malfunctioned and short circuited causing the fire. Luckily the driver, who was driving, was able to stop the vehicle when he saw smoke and was uninjured. All Mohegan FD units cleared the scene by 8pm when the vehicle was towed from the scene. Units on scene were Car 2262, 2266, 2267, Engine 252, Engine 254, Rescue 32, and Utility 80. Lafayette Ave was closed to traffic during this incident and were assisted on scene by the New York State Police.
