At approximately 10:10am today Sunday 7/7/19, Mohegan FD was dispatched to the Cortlandt Homes apartment complex on Lexington Ave in Mohegan Lake for a reported alarm sounding. First units arrived on scene within 3 minutes of dispatch and found smoke showing from the apartment. One of the apartment residents advised first arriving firefighters (Lake Mohegan Professional Firefighters Local 2956) that the 2nd resident was disabled and could not exit the apartment bedroom, which is where the fire was located. The first arriving firefighter quickly entered the apartment to perform a search and located the resident in the fire room. The resident was then dragged out of the apartment and the resident was brought to safety where medical attention was administered. A 1 3/4” hoseline was stretched from Engine 252 while the resident was being rescued and a 5” supply hoseline was also stretched to a nearby hydrant for a water source. The fire was quickly knocked down and contained to the bedroom and found to be an electric wheelchair that caught fire. Members then overhauled the scene by opening up the bedroom walls and ceiling and no fire extension was found. The apartment was ventilated using exhaust fans to remove the heavy amount of smoke. The apartment did suffer smoke and heat damage throughout. Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association Volunteer Ambulance Corps 69B2 and 69B3 transported both residents with smoke inhalation to the Westchester Medical Center for treatment. The Town of Cortlandt Code Enforcement FM26 also assisted on scene. All Mohegan FD units cleared the scene by 12:30pm. We would like to congratulate Lake Mohegan Fire District Career Firefighter Narog who made this successful grab this morning! Mohegan FD units on scene were 2261, 2263, 2266, 22610, Engine 252, Engine 256, Ladder 35, Rescue 32, and Utility 80 operated on scene. Photos by FF LaRocco.
