Tonight, Wed 5/22/19, members of Mohegan FD visited the Hillside Cemetery in Cortlandt to place firefighter memorial flags at the headstones of past members of the Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association. Not only did our members walk the cemetery and place these flags at the gravesites, but they also straightened, fixed, and replaced some of the bronze Mohegan FD flag stands that have become worn or damaged over the years. Our members also adjusted American flags that were placed at Veteran's graves by the military recently. We would like to thank members Clint Thornton and Beverly Thornton who have spearheaded this project over the past few years to ensure every deceased member’s grave is visited! Members this week have also visited the Assumption Cemetery in Cortlandt, Oregon Rd Jewish Cemetery in Cortlandt, United Methodist Church Cemetery in Shrub Oak, Rose Hill Cemetery in Putnam Valley, King David Cemetery in Putnam Valley, Red Mills Church Cemetery in Mahopac Falls, Amawalk Cemetery in Somers, Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, and Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale. Besides placing these firefighter memorial flags at Mohegan Firefighter graves, these flags were placed in the stands of other past members of local fire depts. that these members came across while walking. These memorial firefighter flags have been placed at gravesites annually a few days before Memorial Day for many years as a way for Mohegan FD to honor our deceased members and to never forget the service that they provided to our department and our community.
