At 10:10pm on Thurs 8/11/16, Mohegan Fire responded to a report of a tree fire on the Taconic State Parkway northbound entrance ramp from Route 6 in Yorktown. Upon arrival of units, an approximately 50 foot tree was found to be engulfed in flames due to a lightning strike. The top 25 feet of the tree fell during the initial lightning strike and was already on the ground. This call occurred during a strong thunderstorm which was causing heavy rain and very frequent lightning. Units immediately stretched one 1 3/4" hoseline from Engine 253 over the guardrail and down an embankment and into the woods to begin extinguishing the fire. Due to this occurring in a non-hydrant area (highway), Engine 255 was added to the assignment to supply water to Engine 253. NYS DOT was also requested to respond with a tree crew to cut down this tree. The fire was a deep seated fire burning inside the trunk approximately 25 feet up. Since the tree involved was in a wooded area, members then decided to cut down the approximate 25 foot tree due to no ETA by New York State DOT. The tree was cut down using a chainsaw and members cut the tree up and fully extinguished the burning trunk of the tree. During this entire operation, Mohegan FD's Fire-Police with Utility 50 had the northbound entrance ramp closed. All units cleared the scene by 11:30 PM and the scene was turned over to NYS DOT. Units operating were 2261, 2264, 2266, 2267, DC35, Engine 253, Engine 255, Utility 50/Fire-Police Unit, and Utility 80.
