On Wednesday morning 5/26/21, Mohegan FD (volunteer and career) teamed up with the Westchester County Police and Mohegan EMS at Walter Panas High School in Cortlandt to present a simulated tragic accident on Prom Night with an educational focus and safety message for students on avoiding destructive decisions. The "Last Call" is one of the Safe Summer '21 programs in the multi-faceted community outreach and enforcement campaign the WCPD set up and is proud to support in the Town of Cortlandt this summer. Walter Panas Students learned more about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including by wearing special goggles that mimic the affects of being impaired. There was a mock 911 call placed and then Mohegan Firefighters, Mohegan EMS, and WCPD Emergency Services Unit officers “responded” from LMFD’s Station #3 (Furnace Woods Station) to make the drill seem that more realistic. Once at the high school, all 3 agencies demonstrated what the scene of a serious accident with 3 students heavily trapped inside a vehicle could look like. Our Firefighters and WCPD ESU cops teamed up and utilized numerous extrication tools and other equipment to remove the trapped students and treat their simulated injuries. Various vehicle extrication techniques were utilized to extricate students from the vehicle. This mock exercise lasted approximately 1 hour, but highlighted the importance of this education and we thank WCPD, Walter Panas HS, Lakeland Central School District, and the Town of Cortlandt for the opportunity to allow such a hands on demonstration.
