Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association News Articles http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/rss News articles published on moheganfire.com using RSS 2.0 Mon, 06 Feb 2012 14:55:01 GMT Please Clear The Areas Around Fire Hydrants http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=198 At times, a fire department runs into a problem finding or accessing a fire hydrant. This is not because the fire hydrant has been moved, rather because it is hidden from view. One of the most prevalent problems occurs after a snowstorm, when either the amount of snow accumulation is great, or the snow has been plowed high against the fire hydrant. If this occurs, please take the time to clear the snow away from the fire hydrant so we can see the hydrant and to gain access to it. In the event of a fire, valuable time will be lost if the fire department has to clear away the snow. Other situations arise when vegetation or trash hides the hydrant. It is not uncommon for trash to be piled against and around a fire hydrant. Please cut all vegetation around the fire hydrant and pile trash well away from the hydrant. If you notice that someone has placed an obstruction at a fire hydrant, please discuss with him or her the possible dangers in doing so, or call the police to report it. If a hydrant appears to be defective, notify the Water Department immediately. Of course we all know that no one should park a vehicle in the way of a fire hydrant. If you should see someone park in front of a hydrant, please discuss with him or her possible dangers in doing so, or call the local police to report it. If a fire hydrant is not accessible for the fire department to use in the event of an emergency, additional injury, loss of property, or worse may occur. However, if you use the artificial logs, be sure to follow the directions on the package. -Check your fireplace and chimney often and keep them clean and in good repair. -Always make sure that a good fire screen is in front of the fireplace. -Keep the damper (have your parents show you where it is and how it works) set so the draft (flow of air) will remove all smoke and gases when the fireplace is on. Remember, too much air flow might let the fire get out of control. -Keep the area near the fireplace clear of materials like papers, books, toys, etc. Everyone should know about the possibility of flying sparks from the fire and what to do about them. -Make sure that the fire is completely out before going to bed or if you plan to leave the house. FIREPLACE DANGERS -Do not stack artificial logs in the fireplace like you would real wood. -Do not use your fireplace if it has loose bricks or needs to be cleaned. -Do not burn charcoal, coal, or plastic materials (wrap, cups, plates, etc.). -Do not burn garbage in the fireplace. -Do not ever use gasoline or other such liquid to start or help a fire to start. -Do not allow small children near the fireplace. -Do not leave a fire unattended. -Do not ever start a fire in a fireplace without the participation and supervision of an adult or parent Always keep a fire extinguisher close at hand. Make sure that everyone knows how to use it. Keep emergency phone numbers on or next to the telephone. Always make sure your smoke and heat detectors are functioning properly and that you have checked to make sure it has a working battery. Engine 257/FAS-Team members responded at took up the FAST assignment on scene, while Mahopac Falls and Mahopac Firefighters fought heavy fire and smoke on the 2nd floor of this building. The building is mixed automotive center on the 1st floor and apartments on the 2nd floor. FAS-Team members stoodby on scene in the front and rear until the fire was extinguished. Once the fire was extinguished, all Mohegan units went back into service at approximately 11:30am. All photos are courtesy of Mahopac Falls VFD. Mon, 02 Jan 2012 22:13:40 GMT http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=502 Early Morning Working Fire http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=504 On Wed. morning 12/28/11 at 3:23am, Mohegan Fire was dispatched to Lake Rd in the southern portion of the district in Cortlandt for a reported greenhouse on fire attached to the structure. Within a few minutes, Car 2266 (Lt. Gravius), who was still enroute, advised of heavy fire showing from a distance and transmitted the 1st alarm. With this, Peekskill FD Rescue 134/FAS-Team, Buchanan FD Utility 12/Cascade, Westchester County Dept. of Emergency Services Battalion 17, and Mohegan EMS 69B1 were added to the response. Car 2266 arrived first with heavy fire showing from the greenhouse with fire extension already into the attic of the residence. Car 2266 also advised incoming units that the hydrant was directly in front of the residence and directed first due Engine 258 up the driveway to the front of the residence and to also grab the hydrant with a 5" supply hose for ample water. Car 2266 then advised Engine 252 to standby at the hydrant, Ladder 35 to stage out on Lake Rd, and requested Con Edison Electric for the house service electric line arching due to the fire. Under the command of Car 2262 (Asst. Chief Cerrato), members quickly stretched the first hoseline and began an aggressive interior attack. Though the greenhouse section on fire was knocked down quickly, members had to access the attic section, which was becoming heavily involved in fire. Once Firefighters made access to the attic and positioned a second hoseline, the attic was knocked down within 30 minutes of arrival, but extensive overhaul would be needed to fully extinguish the pockets of fire in the attic, overhaul the residence, and remove burnt items from the attic. In total, 3 hoselines were stretched, with only 2 operating. Members remained on scene until approx. 8am when all units went back into service. Also assisting on scene were Westchester County D.E.S Cause and Origin Team Zone 4, New York State Police, Cortlandt Code Enforcement, Cortlandt Water Dept., and Con Edison Electric. Just after Mohegan units cleared this fire, members responded to a rollover motor vehicle accident on the Bear Mtn. Pkwy. where a vehicle was found on its side leaning against a tree down an embankment. Mon, 02 Jan 2012 22:36:45 GMT http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=503 Keeping The Holidays Safe http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=98 Holiday Safety Tips: -Keep matches, lighters, and candles out of the reach of children. -If children are participating in Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Advent candle-lighting ceremonies in your home, make sure they are being supervised by an adult. -Practice your Operation E.D.I.T.H Plan during the holidays. Visiting friends and family members will need to know two ways out if there is a fire emergency in your home. -Use only decorative lights that have been tested for safety. Look for the UL Label from Underwriters Laboratories on the light cords. -Check each set of lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, and/or loose connections. If there is any question about the safety of the light set, it should be thrown away. -Check the labels on the light set for inside or outside use. Never use inside lights outside. Be sure to fasten your outside light sets tightly so they will not be damaged by the wind. The wind can cause the wires to fray and break. -Read the manufacturers instructions carefully. Do not use more than the recommended number of lights on a circuit. -Always turn off your lights on trees or on paper decorations before going out or going to bed. If there is a short circuit, a fire may start. -Keep children away from decorative lights and electrical decorations. -Always throw wrapping paper away immediately after opening a package. -Never burn wrapping paper in the fireplace. The paper can catch fire very quickly and cause a flash fire. -Never use candles on a tree, near evergreens, near paper decorations, and near wrapping paper. -Always use non-flammable candle-holders, Kinara, Advent wreaths, and Menorahs. -Always place candles where they cannot be knocked down or blown over. Don't forget about them. If candles are in a centerpiece on your holiday table, don't let them melt down into the decorations. That may cause a fire. -IMPORTANT: Make sure your emergency phone numbers are placed next to or on the telephone. Make sure that everyone knows where they are. -Check your fire extinguisher to be sure that it is full and working properly. Make sure that everyone knows where it is and how to use it. Christmas Tree Safety: Christmas Trees: -A real tree can add to the spirit of Christmas by filling your home with beauty and the scent of pine. But a real tree can also pose a fire hazard. Each year, more than 400 residential fires involve Christmas trees and tragically nearly 40 deaths and 100 injuries result from those fires. -Try to select a fresh tree by looking for one that is green. The needles of pines and spruces should bend and not break and should be hard to pull off the branches. On fir species, a needle pulled from a fresh tree will snap when bent, much like a fresh carrot. Also, look for a trunk sticky with sap. -Cut off about two inches of the trunk and put the tree in a sturdy, water-holding stand. Keep the stand filled with water so the tree does not dry out quickly. -Stand your tree away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. Make sure the tree does not block foot traffic or doorways. -If you use an artificial tree, choose one that tested and labeled as fire resistant. Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label. Tree lights: -Only use indoor lights indoors (and outdoor lights only outdoors). Look for the UL label. Check lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Replace or repair any damaged light sets. -Also, use no more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Extension cords should be placed against the wall to avoid tripping hazards, but do not run cords under rugs. -Turn off all lights on trees and decorations when you go to bed or leave the house. Tree ornaments: -Always use the proper step stool or ladder to reach high places. -Read labels before you use materials that come in jars, cans and spray cans. -Never place lighted candles on a tree or near any flammable materials. -Avoid placing breakable tree ornaments or ones with small, detachable parts on lower branches where small children or pets can reach them. -Do not hang popcorn chains and candy canes on the tree when small children are present. They may think that other tree ornaments are also edible. On Fri. night 10/28/11, Dragon Rescue presented a 4 hour classroom powerpoint education on Bus Rescue. Firefighters learned advanced stabilization techniques using rescue jacks, cribbing, and airbags. Firefighters also learned about the construction of school buses, safety systems, and extrication strategies and challenges involving buses. There are specific hazard and problems associated with performing rescue and extrication involving school buses. On Sat. 10/29/11, Firefighters were broken into two teams with one team operating in the front and one operating in the rear of the bus. Firefighters worked hands on with extrication tools and worked on their proficiency in all the related skills learned the Friday night. The school bus was found laying on its side against a passenger vehicle. Using equipment from Mohegan FD Engine 252 and Purchase FD Rescue 30, Firefighters first stabilized the bus utilizing winches, cribbing, airbags, and rescue jacks. Once in place, Firefighters practiced the different ways to safely enter the bus. Once entry was made, Firefighters found that the bus was occupied with numerous "victims" that needed to be extricated. Firefighters then were taught various ways of how to exticate the "victims" by removing the rear door, cutting holes in the roof, and cutting the seats out of the bus. Firefighters used air chisels, saws alls, Hurst hydraulic extrication spreader and cutter tools, and hand tools to perform these tasks and were also taught what tools to use for each step in accessing the trapped "victims". Firefighters were also trained in how to safely package the "victim" for removal from the bus. Once all the "victims" were removed, the bus was then uprighted and all the equipment was packed up onto the apparatus and class was dismissed in early afternoon just as an unusual snowstorm began. In total, Firefighters from Mohegan FD, Peekskill FD, Purchase FD, Hastings on Hudson FD, Bedford FD, North White Plains FD, and Ulster Hose FD (Ulster County) participated in this training. In order to make this training successful, Mohegan FD organized 160lbs. mannequins from Westchester County to be used as "victims" inside the bus, and also supplied the car. Instructors Michael Dragonetti and Jimmy Lennox generously supplied the school bus to be used. As a bonus, all departments that had 4 or more members participate all received extrication gloves as a gift. Pictures provided are from Lt. Gravius and FF Gus Stretz. This is the second training provided by grant money received through Entergy. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced that the theme for Fire Prevention Week would be Protect Your Family From Fire. Fire Prevention Week was be held October 9-15, 2011. The following are pictures were taken at some of the many locations Mohegan FD visited. Some of the locations included Sears, The Home Depot, Jefferson Valley Mall, and Walmart where we held our annual open house. Tue, 06 Dec 2011 21:10:36 GMT http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=499 2 Working Fires On Sunday Night http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=496 On Sun. 10/30/2011 at 7:27pm, Mohegan units were dispatched to Arch Dr in Mohegan Lake for a reported structure fire. Car 2264 arrived first and confirmed a working structure fire with fire showing from an upstairs window. The first alarm was transmitted bringing Yorktown FD's Rescue 16/FAS-Team, Mahopac Falls FD's Rescue 19-6-1/Cascade, Mohegan VAC 69B1, and Westchester County Dept of Emergency Services: Battalion 17 and Cause & Origin Team all to the scene. Under the command of Car 2263, Mohegan members quickly stretched 2 hoselines and found heavy fire in an upstairs den/office. Members aggressively attacked the fire and held the fire to this room. Other members gained access to the roof in case roof ventilation would be needed. Members also checked for further fire extension, but none was found. Ladder 35 was operating in front of the residence while Engine 252 grabbed a hydrant and supplied Ladder 35 with water, and Engine 257 stoodby a second hydrant. With this, Ladder 10 and Engine 258 relocated and stoodby at Headquarters for any other alarms, which there were still storm-related calls continuing. Yorktown and Mahopac Falls units were quickly released from Arch Dr due to the fire under control. At 8:02pm, while Mohegan units were still operating on Arch Dr, Mohegan was dispatched to Dimond Ave in Cortandt for an unknown type fire. Ladder 10, Engine 257, and Engine 258 were assigned to this fire. Within moments of dispatch, 60 Control dispatchers advised units that they received a 2nd call advising of a house fire on Dimond Ave. Car 2263 then requested one Ladder and one Engine to be placed on standby at Mohegan FD Headquarters on Rt. 6. Montrose FD Engine 121 and Yorktown FD Ladder 51 were dispatched for standby. Due to call volume in the Yorktown's district, Croton FD Tower 44 was assigned to the standby instead. Mohegan units arrived on Dimond Ave and found heavy fire showing and the first alarm was transmitted. This brought Peekskill FD Rescue 134/FAS-Team, and Buchanan FD Utility 12/Cascade to that scene. Mohegan VAC 69B1, and Battalion 17 then responded from the Arch Dr fire to Dimond Ave upon the first alarm being transmitted. Car 2262 was assigned Dimond Ave Incident Commander and requested Peekskill FD Tower Ladder 45 to the scene, but due to high call volume in Peekskill, Croton Tower Ladder 44 which was enroute to the standby, was re-directed to the scene. At this time, the fire was deemed exterior/defensive due to the heavy amount of fire and Ladder 10 and Tower Ladder 44 were to set up their aerials for master streams operations. Mahopac Falls FD Rescue 19-6-1, which was returning to their district, was then requested to re-direct to Mohegan FD Headquarters for standby. Somers FD Tower Ladder 18 was also then dispatched to standby at Mohegan FD. At 10:31pm, all Mohegan units were in service from Arch Dr, while Dimond Ave operations were still ongoing. Once the heavy fire was knocked down on Dimond Ave, members went inside to extinguish pockets of fire. The Cause and Origin Team also responded to Dimond Ave once done on Arch Dr. Mohegan units cleared Dimond Ave at approx. 1:00am. Montrose FD Car Engine 121, Mahopac Falls FD Rescue 19-6-1, Somers Tower Ladder 18, along with Engine 252 also responded to 3 calls in Mohegan while on standby. Yorktown PD, Yorktown 34Medic1, and Con Edison Electric also assisted on Arch Dr. New York State Police and Con Edision Electic also assisted on Dimond Ave. Sat, 05 Nov 2011 16:20:01 GMT http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=496 Rare Snowstorm Causes Surge In Calls http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=495 On Sat. 10/29/11 starting around noon, a very rare October snowstorm began to drop wet snow over the region. Although forecasted to be rain that would change to wet snow at night began in the afternoon as snow. This snow began to stick not only to the grassy areas, but by 1pm, the roads began to get covered with this snow. Also, due to the leaves still being on the trees, this weight combined with the weight of the snow caused many trees to snapped and fall. The first call was dispatched at 1:40pm for an motor vehicle accident with injuries on the Taconic State Pkwy. As responding units quickly found out, numerous roads, including main thoroughfares, were impassable due to stuck or slow moving vehicles which caused extensive traffic backups. From this point forward for the next 2 days, Mohegan responded to dozens of storm related calls including trees/wires down, trees down on houses, motor vehicle accidents, inside smoke investigations, electrical emergencies, carbon monoxide emergencies, activated fire alarms, chimney fires, and structure fires. Many roads were blocked by down treees and wires which caused responses to be hampered. By the time the storm was through on Sunday morning about 1 foot of snow fell and almost half of the residents fire district were without power, phones, and cable. From Saturday into Sunday many members stoodby at the firehouse to cover the calls. Storm related calls continued for a few days as trees were removed and power crews from other states assisited and bagan to restore power causing alarms and wires burning issues. Members of Mohegan FD, Peekskill FD, Yorktown FD, and Continental Village FD sat down to a pasta dinner before a presentation by Yorktown Police Officer Paul Dillon on preserving evidence at accident scenes that require investigation or reconstruction. Those in attendance learned steps on how scene preservation is vital to the investigation. Once this segment was complete, Deputy Coordinator James Cuffe of the Westchester County's Cause and Origin Team spoke about fire scene preservation, evidence collection, and fire investigation. The night was very successful and we look forward to joint drills in the future. All pictures courtesy of Yorktown Patch news. Thu, 27 Oct 2011 02:38:51 GMT http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=494 Fire Prevention Week Oct. 9-15, 2011 http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=492 The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announces the theme for Fire Prevention Week – Protect Your Family From Fire. Fire Prevention Week will be held October 9-15, 2011. NFPA has sponsored the fire prevention campaign since 1922, spreading awareness of the dangers of fires and inspiring individuals to prevent the deaths, injuries, and destruction they cause. This year's theme focuses on how to protect your family from fire by planning ahead and integrating simple things into your everyday life. Fires in the home take a great toll on life and property each year. During the five-year-period from 2005-2009, NFPA estimates that U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 373,900 reported home structure fires per year. These fires caused an estimated average of 2,650 civilian deaths, 12,890 civilian injuries, and $7.1 billion in direct property damage per year. Smoking materials remain the leading cause of home fire deaths, while cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires and home fire injuries. Installing systems such as smoke alarms and residential fire sprinklers, as well as identifying potential hazards, can reduce the risk of home fires and property loss, injury, or death due to fire. Nearly two-thirds of home structure fire deaths occur in homes where there was no smoke alarm, or where smoke alarms were present but failed to operate. NFPA has taken the lead in public fire safety outreach by serving as the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for 89 years. The annual public awareness and safety commemoration, which is proclaimed by the President of the United States each year, is observed by fire departments in the U.S. and Canada to mark the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. According to the National Archives and Records Administration's Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record. While Mohegan's FAS-Team was assembling at Headquarters, Yorktown FD cancelled our mutual aid response due to no fire being found. While members were still at Headquarters, at 8:25pm, Mohegan was dispatched to Maple Ave in Cortlandt for motor vehicle accident- car into a utility pole with the vehicle on fire and multiple occupants trapped. Upon arrival of units, a pickup vs tree was found with the driver, who was the only occupant pinned, but no fire or pole involved. Members quickly put the Hurst "Jaws" to work and popped the door and started medical treatment. The patient was removed and transported by Mohegan EMS to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla due to the severity of the damage. Luckily there were no other occupants, due to the passenger compartment severely damaged. Units cleared this scene by 9:30pm. Within minutes, Mohegan units (226-40, 2266, 226-10, Engine 255) were advised that this would be a heavily involved structure fire. Mohegan's FAS-Team arrived on scene and set up teams in both the front and rear of the residence. Due to the heavy involvement of fire, Yorktown was in defensive operation upon arrival of Mohegan units. The FAS-Team set up a ladder in the front once the fire was knocked down and Yorktown FF's, with assistance from Millwood, Croton, and Katonah FD's entered to begin extensive overhaul to ensure full extinguishment. By late night, Mohegan's FAS-Team was put to work in overhaul and went back into service at approximately 11:15pm. Also assisting on scene were Continental Village FD, Somers FD, Buchanan FD, Yorktown VAC, Westchester County's Battalion 10 and Cause and Origin Team Zone 4, and Yorktown PD. Yorktown FD Website Article: http://www.yorktownfire.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=327 Tue, 11 Oct 2011 01:25:19 GMT http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=490 Dedication of 9/11 Memorial http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=488 What was, two years ago, just a vague concept has become a reality. Mohegan's 9/11 memorial was dedicated Sunday, September 18, 2011 in front of Station #2, the Jefferson Valley firehouse. Approximately 50 members of the public and neighboring agencies were in attendance. Mohegan firefighters marched up Lee Boulevard to the firehouse led by a color guard consisting of Mohegan FD, Mohegan Ambulance, Yorktown Police, NY State Police, NYPD, FDNY, and U.S. Air Force members. This memorial has no statues, no names or symbols. Just two steel beams and the words "Never Forget." It was designed to be simple and unassuming. The steel speaks for itself, and it speaks to each person individually and personally. The "Never Forget" emblem on its base takes its shape from the ribbon on the bow of the USS New York. From the day the steel arrived and was laid on the ground months ago, to the present day, people have been stopping by to view it, to touch it, to photograph it, or just to be close to it. We have a special connection to the events on 9/11. It is extremely rare that the New York City Fire Department, arguably the finest fire department in the world, calls for mutual aid. But when they did on 9/11/01, Mohegan was ready. Our volunteer and career firefighters along with our EMS personnel responded to the World Trade Center site and also "backfilled" Engine 88/Ladder 38's firehouse in the Bronx. Our dedication ceremony today, much like our memorial, was simple and without fanfare. Some brief remarks, our National Anthem sung by Yorktown Police Officer Angel Garcia, a prayer led by Chaplain Bob McMahon, a blessing of the memorial by Chaplain Brother Ted Novak and, and a moment of silence. The ceremony concluded with the tolling of Signal 5-5-5-5 on the fire company's "President's Bell" accompanied by the singing of Amazing Grace by P.O. Garcia. We at the Mohegan Fire Dept. and EMS are gratified that so many people have and will continue to be, touched by this memorial, each in their own way. On a personal note: From the concept, to the steel acquisition, the memorial planning & construction, and finally the dedication. This project has, for me, been a labor of love. I would like to thank the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Lake Mohegan Fire District for allowing me the honor of carrying this endeavor forward. -FF Steven Yagoda Sat, 01 Oct 2011 03:18:40 GMT http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=488 Boot Drive - A Huge Success http://www.moheganfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=487 When one fire department calls on another department for assistance it's called mutual aid. Well, Mohegan FD received mutual aid from an uncommon source today, the Yorktown Leos. The Yorktown LEO Club is sponsored by the Yorktown Lions to be a service organization for the youth of our community. Today the Club is one of the Largest in the State with over 75 participants from four area high schools, two middle schools and a branch at a school for special needs children. It is also one of the most active Community Service Clubs (youth or adult) averaging more than two community service projects per month. Fifteen young men and women from the Leos turned out in today's 80+ degree heat to raise money for the 9/11 memorial, which our department is constructing. Some dressed up in costume while others held signs or firefighter boots to collect donations from motorists passing Headquarters on Route 6. While Saturday's usually congested traffic was slowed just a bit more, members of the public were glad to donate and take part in this worthwhile event. To date, the Leos have helped us raise over $3900.00 which will cover most of the cost of the memorial. Members of Mohegan FD are extremely grateful to the members of the Leos for their hard work and mutual aid. By the time the storm hit, the Mohegan FD was prepared with crews on standby at Headquarters and also set up a Command Center at Headquarters. Members were broken into crews and tackled the high call volume that began. Members responded to various calls which ranged from water conditions, pumpouts, trees/wires down, amongst other calls. Members spent the next 24 hours running almost 60 calls in this very severe weather! Members that were not out in the field on calls staged and rested at Headquarters, and relieved field crews as needed. Numerous roads in the fire district were blocked by trees/wires or impassable due to high water from severe flooding. The rain ended on Sunday 8/28, but the high winds continued into Sunday night. Even after the strom ended, many calls continued, as residents assessed the storm damage. Some of the highest damaged areas where numerous calls occurred were Lexington Ave with numerous trees down, Crompond section where numerous trees/wires were down, and Shrub Oak section where there was severe flooding. The damage wasnt njust limited to these areas, as trees fell throughout the district. At the time of this article, members are still occassionally responding to tree/wire and water condition/pumpout calls with some roads still impassable with numerous electric companies working in the area from many distant regions. The damage to electric lines and poles is so severe from trees down that Con Edison is receiving assistance from utility crews from various states, including Texas, Colorado, Kansas, Mississippi, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin. Even at the height of the storm, Mohegan members still responded to calls and assited the public to the best of their ability.
