On Thurs evening 6/6/19 at approximately 8:30pm, Mohegan FD was dispatched to the Brightside Deli located in a commercial strip mall on Westbrook Dr near Oregon Rd/Red Mill Rd in Cortlandt for reported heavy smoke from the building. Upon arrival of units, smoke was showing from this deli with a small fire visible inside from the area of the oven and stove. Members quickly made entry and knocked a bulk of the fire down using a water can fire extinguisher. Other members stretched an 1 3/4" hoseline from Engine 256 to further extinguish the fire and began ventilation of the smoke. Engine 252 laid a precautionary 5" supply hose from a hydrant on Red Mill Rd. Members also set up numerous ground ladders to access the roof of the strip mall. Once the fire was confirmed extinguished within a few minutes, members began full ventilation with exhaust fans including removing smoke from the other storefronts. The Westchester County Dept of Emergency Cause and Origin Team Zone 4, Westchester County Health Dept, and Cortlandt Code Enforcement were all requested to the scene to assist. The fire was found to be a garbage can that burned in the area of the stove with some extension to the wall. Fortunately a passerby called 911 to report this fire, as the fire alarm system was found to be not working. All units cleared the scene by 11pm. Units operating were Car 2261, 2262, 2264, 2265, 2266, 2267,2269, Engine 252, Engine 256, Ladder 35, Rescue 32, and Utility 80. Photos are courtesy of FF G. Stretz.
