Tonight Saturday 2/9/19 at 7:55pm, Mohegan FD was dispatched to a reported transformer explosion in front of NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital on Crompond Rd (Rt 202/35) in Cortlandt. A loud explosion was felt and heard throughout the area due to this explosion. Upon arrival, Mohegan Firefighters found a confirmed manhole explosion underground with significant damage to the roadway and underground manholes. A debris field was found across Rt 202 and throughout the front parking lot area and main entrance of the hospital. The explosion was powerful enough for both manhole covers to land approximately 100 feet away and to split one manhole cover into 2 pieces. Con Edison Electric and Gas were both requested to the scene, along with the New York State Department of Transportation. Due the Rt 202 and Lafayette Ave needing to be closed, New York State Police and Westchester County Police Department both assisted on scene with road closures. Firefighters stood by on scene and also assisted Con Edison and HVHC staff force entry into the basement utility rooms of the hospital to check for potential natural gas or carbon monoxide readings. Thankfully there were no readings found and the hospital didn’t lose power or gas service and remained fully operational during the entire incident. Once Con Edison deemed the scene safe and NYS DOT cleaned the roadway of debris, all Mohegan FD units cleared by 12:15am. Con Edison will remain on scene to further investigate and make proper repairs to the underground manhole. Mohegan FD units on scene were Car 2263, 2267, 2269, 226-10, Engine 252, Engine 254, Rescue 32, Utility 50/Fire-Police Unit, and Utility 80.
