Tonight Wednesday 1/23/19, Mohegan FD held its annual Radiological Emergency Preparedness and Radiological Equipment refresher training at our Station #3 (Furnace Woods Station). With over 30 members in attendance, our guest speaker, Westchester County Dept of Emergency Services Battalion 17, reviewed the county’s emergency response plan including the 10 mile radius emergency evacuation plan of Entergy’s Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan. This is extremely important to us due to our fire district within this evacuation zone. Our members also reviewed the general public receiving centers, school receiving centers, and the decontamination locations for our first responders. In addition, our members reviewed our radiological equipment which we store in quarters as part of the Westchester County Office of Emergency Management response plan. Our members were able to train hands on with this equipment and refresh our knowledge and skills when handling and operating this equipment. Our members also refreshed our limitations and radiological exposure when operating in the evacuation zone and ingesting the Potassium Iodide (KI) pills prior to operating. This was an overall extremely important refresher training which we never want to see implemented in a real emergency!
