At approximately 5pm on Wednesday 9/19/18, Mohegan FD and Yorktown Police Department were dispatched to Crompond Rd (Rt 202) in front of the Staples Plaza for a reported fully involved concrete mixer truck fire. While units were responding, a large header of smoke was visible from a distance. Car 2261 and 2263 arrived first and confirmed a truck fire with heavy fire from the engine compartment and a large diesel and oil spill on the shoulder of the roadway that was also burning. Members quickly stretched two 1 3/4” hoselines from Engine 254 and Engine 257 and quickly knocked down the fire. While the fire was being extinguished, other members began mitigating the fluid spill in the roadway and in 2 nearby storm drain basins to prevent further spread of the fluids after mixing with the runoff water from the fire extinguishment. Due to an approximately 30 gallon mix of diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid, and motor oil spilled, the NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation and the NYC Dept of Environmental Protection were notified for a response. Members dammed 2 storm drains with speedy dry and hazmat pads to contain the fluids, and with the assistance of the NYC DEP Police, members set up hazmat booms in a nearby stream, which did show signs of oil and fuel in the running water. Members remained on scene mitigating the spill and assisting Yorktown Police with traffic control until a certified hazmat cleanup crew was on scene. All Mohegan FD units cleared the scene by 8pm, while Yorktown PD remained on scene with the cleanup crew. Units on scene were Car 2261, 2263, DC38, 2269, Engine 254, Engine 257, Rescue 32, and Utility 50/Fire Police Unit.
