On Monday 7/20/18 at 6:19pm, Mohegan FD, Mohegan EMS, and Cortlandt Paramedics were dispatched to the area of Pumphouse Rd between Dogwood Rd and Gallows Hill Rd in Cortlandt for a reported ATV accident. While units were enroute, the caller could only state that he was in the woods in that area and based on this caller, the patient was at least 300 feet into the woods from the roadway. With this update, the Continental Village FD was requested to go on standby in their quarters with their gator for a possible response to the scene. Upon arrival, the cell phone caller was awaiting crews at the base of a mountainside trail on Pumphouse Rd and would bring members into the scene on his quad, which was a significant distance up the mountain trail from the road. The Cortlandt Medic (35Medic1) was quickly brought into the scene on this civilian quad and Continental Village FD was now requested to the scene with their gator. When patient contact was made by 35Medic1, he advised to launch a medevac helicopter due to the severity of the injuries and the prolonged time to remove the patient off the mountainside, which was greater than 500 feet up the mountain in close proximity to the Continental Village FD district line. During this, firefighters began to enter the woods trail with additional EMS and rescue equipment to assist with patient treatment and to stabilize the rolled over quad on the steep dirt and rock terrain. While members were treating the patient, other members stabilized the quad with rope and webbing. Once Continental Village FD Utility 142 (gator) arrived on scene in the woods, a team effort of Mohegan Firefighters. Mohegan EMS, Cortlandt Medic, and Continental Village Firefighters slowly and carefully began to bring the patient down the trail on Utility 142 to the awaiting ambulance (69B2). Car 2264, 2267, Engine 254, Rescue 32, and Westchester County Police also were redirected from this scene when the medevac was initially requested and set up a landing zone for LifeNet Air 2 at the nearby St. Columbanus Catholic School on Oregon Rd. While the patient was being transferred into 69B1 at the scene, the medevac was landing at the landing zone. 69B1 transported the patient to the awaiting medevac crew and the patient was quickly transported via helicopter to the Westchester Medical Center. At the scene, Mohegan Firefighters and Continental Village Firefighters assisted Westchester County Police and New York State Police in removing the quad from the woods. Once the quad was towed from the scene, all Mohegan FD units cleared the scene by 8:00pm. One firefighter was transported to Hudson Valley Hospital with a minor injury.
