Today Thurs 5/3/18 at approximately 11:15am, Mohegan FD was dispatched to Indian Hill Rd in Jefferson Valley for a reported brush fire. Upon arrival, an approximately 1/2 acre brush fire was found that was expanding due to the dry and windy conditions. Engine 253 accessed the driveway and members quickly stretched an 1 3/4” hoseline and a 5” supply hose was stretched to a hydrant at the base of the driveway. Under the command of Car 2263, additional manpower and an additional engine (Engine 258) were requested to the scene. Due to the fire now rapidly expanding up the mountainside and advancing toward the heavily wooded Donald Trump State Park, Mahopac Falls FD was requested to the scene with their brush truck and all available manpower. Putnam Valley FD was also requested to the scene with their gator and manpower. Due to the size of the fire, which grew to approximately 5 acres, Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department was requested to the scene with their brush and Continental Village Vol. Fire Department was requested to the scene with their gator. Mahopac FD accessed the fire from a driveway a few houses away and a Putnam Valley FD tanker was requested to the scene to access that driveway and supply Mahopac FD with water supply due to the long driveway. Multiple hoselines ( 2 1/2”, 1 3/4”, and forestry hose) was used to contain the fire while other firefighters used rakes and leaf blowers to create a fire break. Numerous burning trees also had to be cut down with chain saws for full extinguishment. Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association Volunteer Ambulance Corps/Empress Emergency Medical Services stood by on scene, along with Cortlandt VAC’s rehab unit. Also assisting on scene were Yorktown Police Department, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Police, and New York State Park Police, and the Yorktown Fire Marshal. All units cleared the scene by 3:30pm. The Montrose Fire Dept stood by at Mohegan FD Station #1 during the incident and took in a residential fire alarm. This fire wa sstarted by a fire pit that got out of control due to the windy conditions. We remind everyone that there is a statewide burn ban until May 15th that will be strictly enforced with summonses/fines by the NYS Environmental Conservation Police!
