From Friday 3/2/18 through Friday 3/9/18, the area experienced severe weather from a few extreme nor'easter storms in just one week. These storms created extremely high winds, snow and rain over various days for the week. With the extreme weather, Mohegan FD's call volume saw a large increase for the week. These storms were so powerful that most of our fire district had no electrical power from hundreds of trees down, that brought down utility poles and wires in many areas. Many residents relied on their fireplaces and generators for heat and power. Many main thoroughfares and local roads were blocked by trees, utility poles, and wires down and many traffic light didn't have power and were not operational for days. The Friday 3/2/18 storm was so severe that we manned our own base, even with our phone lines down, for dispatching due to the county's fire/ems dispatch center (60 Control) being overwhelmed on Fri. 3/2/18. Althogh dispatch went back to normal at the county dispatch center, for a few days we operated without any phones at our Headquarters besides cell phones but we continued functioning as close to normal as we could. We again manned the base on Wed. 3/7/18, during that storm. The Town of Yorktown and Town of Cortlandt both declared a States of Emergency, on top of New York State's and Westchester County's State of Emergency. Yorktown even activated the NYS National Guard to assist emergency services by delivering supplies and provide welfare checks on residents. The area also saw utility crews from outside our region as far away as Quebec, Canada assist in the electrical restoration over those upcoming days/weeks. NYS Office of Emergency Management/Homeland Security also assisted the area by restocking local emergency services with caution tape, traffic cones, and flares. Mohegan FD held 2 emergency storm standby's during this week when the strongest storms occurred. Here is the call volume breakdown from March 2, 2018 through March 9, 2018.
