On Saturday morning 12/23/17 at 4:39am, Mohegan FD was dispatched to the area on East Main St and Wood St in Jefferson Valley for a reported basement fire. While units were still enroute, a 2nd 911 call advised of visible fire from the side of the residence and the residents were possibly trapped on the 2nd floor. With this update, Car 2261, while enroute, transmitted the 10-75 (working structure fire), which brought the 1st alarm working fire assignment to the scene. This 1st alarm assignment added Yorktown FD's FAS-Team, Mahopac Falls FD's Rescue 19-6-1 for its cascade, Mohegan VAC, and Peekskill EMS 7506/Rehab Unit to the response to the scene. Putnam Valley FD was also special called above the 1st alarm to respond with their Rescue 24-6-1 and manpower due to the update given of possible entrapment. Engine 253 quickly arrived 1st due on East Main St and accessed the rear driveway and confirmed a working structure fire with fire visible from multiple floors. Engine 253 also advised units the front of the residence was better to be accessed off Wood St. Engine 252 secured a nearby hydrant for Engine 253. Car 2261 then requested Engine 258 as an additional engine to respond to Wood St for better access. Responding Putnam Valley FD units were also redirected to respond to Wood St for access to the scene. A total of 5 hoselines were quickly stretched from Engine 253 and Engine 258 (once on scene) to aggressively attack the fire. Engine 258 secured a second hydrant on Wood St for additional water supply. It was quickly confirmed that all the residence evacuated safely and were in the care of Mohegan EMS. Due to the residence being balloon frame construction, members encountered heavy fire in the basement, 1st floor, which quickly extended up through the 2nd floor. With fire conditions quickly deteriorating, members were forced to back out of the residence and perform an exterior attack. All 5 hoselines (two 1 3/4" and one 2 1/2" hoselines from Engine 253 and one 1 3/4" and one 2 1/2" hoseline from Engine 258) were set up around the residence and the deck gun from Engine 253 was set up. Due to the close proximity of nearby apartments that were also filling with smoke from the fire, firefighters assisted in evacuating those residents to a safe location. Buchanan FD was also special called to the scene with their bus to provide temporary shelter for these evacuated neighbors. All 6 residents were transported by Mohegan EMS to New York Presbyterian- Hudson Valley Hospital for smoke inhalation. Once the fire was knocked down from the exterior, firefighters re-rentered the residence to further extinguish the fire and perform extensive overhaul operations. The American red Cross was also requested to the scene to assist the displaced residents. Yorktown PD also assisted on scene by providing traffic control/road closures. The Westchester County Dept. of Emergency Services Battalion 17 and Cause and origin Team Zone 4 also provided assistance on scene. the Yorktown Fire Marshal and Yorktown Building Dept. deemed the residence inhabitable. Con Edison Electric and Yorktown Water Dept. did secure the utilities. Mahopac Falls FD Rescue 19-6-1 set up on East Main St for its cascade and also set up its canopy and had the heat set up inside the rig for potential rehab. Putnam Valley FD Rescue 24-6-1 was set up on Wood St for its cascade and heat in the rig turned on for possible rehab. Peekskill EMS set up with Mohegan EMS on East Main St with a tent and provided refreshments and rehab during the heavy rain and cold temperatures. Peekskill FD Engine 132, and Montrose FD Tower Ladder 8 provided standby coverage at Mohegan FD Headquarters on Rt. 6 and Croton FD Engine 118 relocated and covered Mohegan FD Station #3 (Furnace Woods) on Croton Ave. All units cleared the scene by 10am.
