At approximately 5:40pm this evening Thurs 12/28/17, Mohegan FD was dispatched to Gilbert St in Cortlandt for a reported chimney fire. Upon arrival, units found an active fire in the chimney from a wood burning stove insert inside an older fireplace. The fire was contained to the chimney and the insulation wrapped around the wood burning stove. Under the command of Car 2261, members worked from both the interior and roof. The interior crews operated to remove the wood burning stove insert to gain access to the fire and also checked the walls on the 1st and 2nd floor/crawl space with a thermal imagining camera to ensure there was no extension. A dry chemical extinguisher was then utilized to extinguish the fire, while the roof team dropped our chimney chains to break up the smoldering creosote. Units operated on scene until approximately 7:15pm. During the operation Ladder 10 operated its 75 ft aerial in front of the residence with Engine 256, while Engine 252 stood by a fire hydrant. Units on scene were Car 2261, 2263, 22610, DC44, Engine 252, Engine 256, Ladder 10, and Rescue 32.
