At approximately 8:40am on Tues 2/14/17, Mohegan FD was dispatched to Rt 202 (Crompond Rd) in the area of the Bear Mountain Pkwy Extension in Yorktown for a reported car fire. While enroute, units observed the smoke from a distance and upon arrival found a heavily involved pickup truck in the roadway. One 1 3/4" hoseline was stretched from Engine 258 and the fire was knocked down quickly. Engine 252 stood by and set up to supply Engine 258 with additional water if needed. One Class "D" (metals fire) extinguisher was also utilized to assist in extinguishing the magnesium steering wheel which was burning and ultimately melted. The fire was deemed mechanical accidental due to the operator having engine trouble while driving All Mohegan Fire units cleared the scene by 9:45am, when the vehicle was towed from the scene. Units operating on scene were Car 2264, 2269, Engine 252, Engine 258, Rescue 32, Utility 18, and Utility 80. Yorktown Police Department assisted our Fire-Police members with traffic control during the incident. While on scene, the McDonald's located at 3481 Crompond Rd generously donated approximately 15 coffees, waters, and 15 breakfast sandwiches to our members and police officers by the staff walking the refreshments over to the scene.
