At 11:33pm on Sun night 7/17/16, Mohegan Fire units were dispatched to Lake Ridge Cove in the Villa of Lake Condos in Mohegan Lake for a commercial fire alarm activation. While units were enroute WCDES 60 Control dispatchers advised of a 2nd call from the resident advising of a dryer fire in the residence. Due to this update, Car 2264 immediately requested the call to be retoned and upgraded to a dryer fire. Upon arrival of Car 2264, smoke was showing from the front door of the condo unit, with the residents safely evacuated. The homeowner also advised fire units of active fire in the dryer in laundry room on the 2nd fl. Firefighters investigated and found heavy smoke throughout the condo and quickly stretched an 1 3/4" hose line to the front door precautionary, while other members investigated and found the fire contained to the dryer on the 2nd fl. The fire was quickly knocked down using a water can extinguisher by these firefighters. Members removed the clothing and then removed the dryer from the residence without further damage or fire spread. Firefighters also checked the dryer vent pipe and laundry room with a thermal imaging camera to ensure there was no extension. Firefighters ventilated the entire residence using multiple exhaust fans and secured the utilities (electric and natural gas) to the dryer. Engine 253 stoodby a nearby hydrant l, while Ladder 35 was in front of the condo with Engine 252. Units operating were Car 2264 (IC), 2265, 2266, Engine 252, Engine 253, and Ladder 35. All units cleared the scene by 12:45am. This fire was knocked down prior to the FD arrival by the homeowner using a household extinguisher and also proves how effective both having a household extinguisher is and also operating smoke detectors (in this case a fire alarm system).
