On Saturday 5/7/16, Mohegan EMS Chief 6911 and Ambulance 69B3 participated in a large-scale mass casualty incident (MCI) drill located at the Westchester County Airport in Harrison. Initially, our crew was debriefed at Purchase College in regards to what was expected during the drill. Once debriefed, our EMS crew then staged in the college's parking lot until 60 Control (Westchester County Dept of Emergency Services' Fire Control dispatched the Mohegan EMS crew. 69B3 then "responded" and entered the airport through one of the emergency entrances and once on scene, staged at the command post until they were requested by operating personnel at the crash site. 69B3 then drove out across the runway and approached the first of two plane crashes. The scenario for this drill was 2 aircraft colliding mid-air and ultimately crashed in 2 separate locations. The first plane crash had a total of 165 patients that needed to be triaged and transported by EMS units. While EMS crews provided "patient" care, multiple fire units operated with fire suppression to extinguish the "aircraft" fire. The second separate aircraft scene had 4 passengers, who were extricated by fire personnel, and then "declared deceased" by EMS units. The multiple fire depts operating at the second "crash site" then proceeded to extinguish this second aircraft fire. During the entire operation, all the first responders rotated through all aspects of the incident command system. The EMS agencies operating also rotated in and out of service as the "real life" ambulance for injuries that could potential occur to all the units operating at the drill. In total, Mohegan EMS transported 4 "drill, green tagged patients". This drill created the ability for our members to work with numerous other first responders (Fire, EMS, Police ) from throughout Westchester County, Putnam County, and neighboring Fairfield County, Ct. This MCI drill also enhanced our members training in large-scale emergencies or disasters. Photos of courtesy of EMT Sam Stretz, who was part of our crew. Due to all participants engaging in the training we could not get any pictures of our crew during this drill attending to their "patients".
