On Sunday evening 2/7/16 at 6pm and just before the Super Bowl would begin, Mohegan FD was dispatched to Maple Ct in Cortlandt for a reported structure fire. Within seconds of dispatch, multiple calls were being received by 60 Control (Westchester County Dept of Emergency Services dispatchers). The 10-75 was also immediately transmitted just after dispatch, with Car 2264 advising of heavy smoke showing from a distance. Upon arrival of Car 2264, heavy fire was showing from the residence that was quickly engulfing the entire residence. Due to this, it was deemed that this would be an exterior/defensive operation. Under the command of Car 2261, multiple hoselines were stretched and operated quickly from Engine 258, which included two 1 3/4" and two 2 1/2" hoselines. One of the 2 1/2" hoselines was a blitz attack nozzle. In addition to the multiple hoselines being operated, the aerial of Ladder 35 was extended for a ladder pipe water operation. Engine 252 laid 5" supply hose from a nearby hydrant to feed water to Engine 258 and Ladder 35. With the 10-75 being transmitted, this brought additional resources to the scene which consisted of Croton FD Car 2082 and Engine 119/FAS-Team, Buchanan FD Car 2552 and Utility 12/Cascade, Mohegan EMS 6912 and 69B3, Peekskill EMS 7506/Rehab, and Westchester County Dept of Emergency Services Battalion 17 and Cause and Origin Team. Putnam Valley FD Engine 24-2-1 and Yorktown FD Ladder 51 relocated to Mohegan FD Station 1 to provide cover for any additional calls and Yorktown EMS was placed on standby in their quarters for any additional EMS calls. Due to the residence being fully involved with very heavy fire, Croton FD Engine 119 was utilized to provide an additional water source by laying 5" supply hose from a second fire hydrant, which was located on Maple Ave. Croton FD and Buchanan FD members were also utilized to assist in fireground operations, including overhaul. Due to the structural instability from a collapse, the residence eventually would have to be demolished by the use of an escavator to allow firefighters to fully extinguish pockets of fire. Once the residence was demolished and the fire was fully extinguished, all units cleared the scene shortly after 12am. Other resources assisting on scene were Con Edison Electric, Cortlandt Water Dept, Cortlandt Code Enforcement, and New York State Police. With the magnitude and how quickly the fire spread, there were no injuries and the homeowners escaped from the residence safely. All photos are courtesy of FF Gus Stretz.
