On Wed 1/27/16 just as in-house training ended, at 9:34pm, Mohegan FD was dispatched to the McDonald's fast food restaurant in the Cortlandt Town Center on Rt 6 in Mohegan Lake for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was found emanating from the exterior kitchen exhaust unit on the roof and there was a moderate smoke condition throughout the inside of the restaurant. Further investigation found active fire located in a kitchen deep fryer unit, with fire extending up the exhaust duct work towards the roof. The fire also extending out of the kitchen deep fryer unit itself and upwards toward the ceiling. Under the command of Car 2261, the 10-75 was transmitted bringing the first alarm assignment consisting of Mohegan EMS, Croton FD's FAS-Team, Putnam Valley FD's Rescue for its cascade, Peekskill EMS Rehab Unit, and Westchester County Battalion 17 all to the scene. Engine 252 stretched one 1 3/4" hoseline into the interior, while Ladder 35 extended its 105ft aerial to the roof. Engine 257 stood by a fire hydrant within the mall. The fire was knocked down shortly after with the hoseline, after an attempt to extinguish the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher proved unsuccessful. The dry chemical extinguisher did however hold the fire from further extending. After the fire was extinguished, members began ventilation with exhaust fans from Mohegan FD apparatus and Putnam Valley's Rescue Truck. Other members also checked for further extension by opening up the rooftop exhaust unit pipe and interior ceiling. No further fire extension was found. Units assisting Mohegan FD on scene were Mohegan EMS 69B3, Croton FD Engine 119/FASTeam, Putnam Valley Rescue 24-6-1/Cascade, Peekskill EMS 7506/Rehab plus Westchester County Dept of Emergency Services Battalion 17, County Car 4, and Cause and Origin Team. Other agencies on scene were Cortlandt Code Enforcement, NY State Police, Con Edison Gas and Electric, Westchester County Health Dept, and Cortlandt Water Dept (due to a broken water main on the mall's property near hydrant). During this fire, units standing by at Mohegan FD Station 1 were Yorktown FD Engine 272 and Montrose FD Tower Ladder 8. All units cleared the scene and were back in service by approximately 11:30 PM. Due to damage to the interior and exterior of the building, plus the electric and natural gas being shut off, the restaurant has been temporarily closed until all the repairs can be completed.
