On Sunday 5/3/15 at approximately 2:15pm, Mohegan Fire units were dispatched to the rear woods of the residence off Marcy Street in Mohegan Lake for a reported brush fire. Upon arrival of Car 2264, a large brush fire was found deep in the woods that was approximately 1 acre in size and rapidly spreading, due to the dry conditions and moderate wind. Numerous 911 calls were also being received from throughout that area of the district for a smoke condition, reports of the brush fire, and ash falling onto houses. Approximately 600 feet of 1 3/4" hose line was stretched by firefighters from Engine 252 to begin attacking the fire. Engine 252 laid a 5" supply hose from a close by hydrant and drove up a resident's driveway to get better access to the woods. Other arriving firefighters began to use forestry rakes and indian tank backpacks filled with water to attempt to contain this fast growing fire. Upon arrival Car 2262, Putnam Valley FD was special called to the scene with their brush fire gator and manpower. Mohegan EMS was also requested to standby at the scene. Due to the prolonged fireground operations in the warm weather, Mohegan EMS 6913 requested Putnam Valley EMS and Peekskill EMS Rehab unit to the scene for stand by. Putnam Valley FD arrived on scene and quickly deployed their gator, which carries approximately 100 gallons of water, and also their manpower with equipment to assist in containing the blaze. The fire continued to spread and burned approximately 3 acres of woods before being contained after a few hours of hard labor intensive work by firefighters. Firefighters used a number of resources to extinguish this fire including hose line from Engine 252 , Putnam Valley FD's forestry hose, Putnam Valley FD's gator, and hands on labor of firefighters making a fire break using forestry rakes, indian tanks, and backpack leaf blowers. Firefighters also had to control numerous hot spots that continued to occur in the burnt land, and also had to cut down numerous trees with a chainsaw to prevent further fire spread, as the trees were burning inside and approximately 30 feet up the bark. The fire was fully contained and all the hot spots were extinguished by 6pm. All units cleared the scene at 6:30 PM. While firefighters operated on scene, Mohegan FD also responded to another small brush fire and a motor vehicle accident in our district.
