On Sunday 1/18/15, heavy freezing rain began to hit the area in the morning hours. Due to this severe icy weather, Mohegan FD was kept busy with numerous calls throughout the day. Mohegan FD responded to a total of 6 fire/rescue calls within the day, including a rollover accident with 5 patients requiring extrication. Mohegan EMS was also kept busy with numerous other medical emergencies. Here is the list of today's fire/rescue incidents:

9:44am: Car 2265 and Engine 253 assisted New York State Police with a highway closure of the Taconic State Parkway Northbound at Rt. 6 in Yorktown due to severe icy and impassable road conditions, along with numerous vehicles in accidents in Putnam County. This closure was from Rt. 6 all the way to I-84 in Dutchess County. Mohegan FD assisted until approximately 11:55am,, and turned the scene over to NYSP. This closure remained in affect through approximately 3pm when the road became passable!

10:00am (approximately): Motor Vehicle Accident Rollover on Furnace Dock Rd At Dixon Rd in Cortlandt. Car 2264/U80 and Engine 254 operated and found no injuries and assisted New York State Police with traffic control.

All 5 occupants were entrapped inside and were removed by members who stabilized the vehicle with cribbing and then operated Hurst tools (Jaws of Life) from Engine 258 to gain access to the vehicle. Members also used a chain saw to cut away a down tree from around the vehicle to further gain access by popping the doors open. All patients were removed within 30 minutes, and all 5 were transported by 69B3, 86B1, and 86B3 to the Westchester Medical Center for further medical treatment. While on scene assisting NYSP, another 2 vehicle accident occurred just behind Engine 253, which was blocking the exit ramp on the Taconic State Pkwy. Thankfully there were no injuries in that accident, and no members or fire apparatus were struck. All units cleared by 1:30pm
