On Wed. 8/27/14, Mohegan Firefighters held a low angle rope rescue training at the Van Cortlandtville Elementary School on Rt. 6 in Mohegan Lake. The hill in front of the school was a great tool for us to use. Firefighters reviewed our rope rescue equipment, ropes, webbing, and knots. Once everybody reviewed this, firefighters began to set up anchor points utilizing Engine 252. Firefighters then set up a rope system and lowered a member down an embankment to the "victim". Once the firefighter was lowered by rope and lowering rack, the firefighter relayed information as to the victim's medical condition and what resources/equipment would be needed to remove the victim. Other firefighters then ascended the embankment with a stokes basket and assisted in packaging the victim for removal. Firefighters on top then switched the rope system over to a 2:1 rope system to remove the victim and firefighters up the embankment. This evolution was practiced a few times until all firefighters had the opportumity to work the various positions of the rope rescue system.
