On Tues. 7/8/14 at 12:29am, Mohegan FD responded to a possible residential basement fire on Hunterbrook Rd during a thunderstorm. Upon arrival, firefighters found a slight haze of smoke throughout the residence, with the basement fire extinguished by the homeowner. Firefighters overhauled the basement, in the area of the dryer, and checked the residence for extension. While investigating, it was found that a detached shed was struck by lightning, which in turn, caused an electric arc through the electric wiring from the shed into the interior of the residence, causing an electric outlet to burn in the basement and extend to clothing and the wall directly next to the dryer. Originally thought to be a fire involving the dryer, it was found that the electrical cord involved originated from the exterior shed approximately 30 feet from the residence, where slight charring was found on the outside of shed itself. The main electric breaker for the house was also found to be tripped from the power surge. Firefighters continued the overhaul of the basement and further checked the entire residence and detached shed for any extension. No extension was found during overhaul. Con Edison Electric was requested and responded to disconnect the electric meter to prevent any further electrical problems. All units cleared by 2am. Yorktown Police also assisted on scene.
