On Monday 5/7/12 at 1:51pm, Mohegan Fire, Mohegan EMS, and the Yorktown Medics were dispatched to the Taconic State Pkwy Southbound in the area of the emergency turn around for a reported subject fallen off an atv in the woods. Upon arrival, members located the atv operator with serious injuries on a trail approximately 100 feet from the highway on a steep embankment approximately 40 feet above the highway. Under the command of 2266 (Lt. Gravius), patient care was being received by Mohegan EMS and Yorktown Paramedics, with Mohegan Firefighters assisting in patient care and the patient was being packaged for transport on a backboard in a stokes basket. Units were also determining how to safely remove the patient to the ambulance on the highway down this steep embankment with waist high brush and small trees. Rescue 32 remained on scene and Engine 253 was returned to Station #2 to pickup Ladder 10 and respond back to the scene with the rope rescue equipment. In the process of this, it was determined that the best way to extract the patient from the trail would be to utilize the aerial ladder instead of possible more injury from the steep embankment. Due to the distance from the roadway, Ladder 35 was special called to the scene and was advised to set up the aerial ladder. Ladder 10 was then returned to Headquarters to standby for the City of Peekskill, which had a structure fire. Upon the arrival of Ladder 35, the 105 ft aerial was extended up to the trail and members loaded the patient onto the aerial ladder to slide the patient down. Other members on the trail secured a belay line that was attached to webbing and a carabiner that was set up on the stokes basket. Instead of slidding the patient all the way down the aerial, members decided it would be safer to lower the aerial down to the highway for safe removal of the stokes basket and patient onto the stretcher. With members secured to the aerial using their harnesses, this task was completed and the patient was safely removed to awaiting EMS personnel. The patient was then transported to the Westchester Medical Center by 69B3 and Yorktown Paramedic. All units cleared the scene by 3pm. During this incident, 226-10 and Ladder 10 remained on standby for Peekskill. Also assisting on scene was New York State Police. 2 Southbound lanes on the Taconic Pkwy were closed during the duration of the incident. Pictures courtesy of Mohegan EMS/Empress EMS.
