At approx. 1:15 pm on Wed. 7/7/10, Mohegan Firefighters were notified of a structure fire at 36 Montrose Station Road in the Town of Cortlandt. Within minutes, Car 2262 was on scene confirming a fully involved structure and announced an exterior attack, due to the large volume of fire in the structure. The first alarm was transmitted bringing Peekskill FD Rescue 134/FAS-Team, Buchanan FD Utility 12/Cascade, and Mohegan EMS to the scene. Firefighting efforts were hindered when first on scene by live power lines down due to the fire and apparatus could not get close enough to the residence on the long dirt driveway. With the house being fully involved, this made surrounding trees and brush catch fire as well, causing an even bigger problem for firefighters with a fast moving brush fire. Firefighters quickly put a deck gun from Engine 254 into use and deployed four hoselines to attack the fire, while Engine 258 laid over 1,000 feet of 5" supply hose from the closest hydrant. Two hoselines were placed at the front of the residence and two hoselines at the rear. Mohegan EMS arrived on scene and quickly went to work rehydrating firefighters on scene due to the extreme high temperatures over 100 degrees and high humidity. Mohegan EMS also treated two firefighters on scene for heat exhaustion. The mutual aid departments also arrived on scene and were quickly put to work to assist Mohegan firefighters. Yorktown FD Engine 270/FAS-Team was then requested to the scene, as Peekskill FD went to work in the entinguishment. Somers FD Utility 88, a rehab bus, was also special requested to the scene to assist Mohegan EMS with rehab. The Westchester County Cause and Origin Team and New York State Police also assisted on scene. The Mahopac Falls FD relocated to Station 2 and Continental Village FD relocated to Station 4, both with an engine. Firefighters were on scene for approximately 6hrs and cleared at cleared at approximately 7:30pm. Con Edison Electric and the Cortlandt Water Dept also assisted on scene to cut the utilites to the residence. Photos by Gus Stretz.
